the word name now I'mgoing to go up to the right side of thecontrol panel all the way over here andselect from the pop-up-menu paragraphrules or you could press command optionJ on the Mac or ctrl alt J on WindowsI'm going to use the paragraph rulesdialog box to add that line to do that Ifirst turn on a rule above I just clickon that little rule on checkbox onepoint Lions are kind of clunky so I'llmake this thinner let's say half a pointand I'll make sure that it's a solidline and it's going to go all the wayacross the column from the left edge ofthe column to the right of course theproblem here is that the rule and theline or overlapping which looks kind ofugly so I'm also going to add a rulebelow I'll click on the rule abovecheckbox here and set this to rule belowand turn on the rule below as well let'schange the color of this so we can seewhat's going on I'll just make it cyanjust for a moment so we can see I'llalso make it thicker let's say about 4points you see I now have two rules onthis paragraph a rule above and rulebelow and both are aligned along thebaseline of that paragraph I'm going tochange the offset of this rule belowjust a little bit by pressing the arrowkeys on my keyboard and you'll see thatas I go down pressing the down arrow keyit goes to a negative offset a negativeoffset on a rule below actually movesthe ruleso that it overlaps the rule above whywould I want to overlap it well becauseI'm going to change the width of thisrule this rule below to text instead ofcolumn now this rule below just overlapsthe text and leaves the rest of the rulethe black one to go out beyond the textfinally I'll change the color from cyanto paper because paper does not show upat all so as you can see I have a ruleabove that goes across the entire columnand I have a rule below that goes justthe width of the text and that knocksout that rule above the last thing Inotice here is if that line is too closeto the word I'd like to move it awayjust a little bit and I can fix that bychanging the right indent of this rulebelow if I increase the right indent itactually reduces the size of that whiterule so I don't want to increase it Iwant to decrease it just like the offsetI want it to be negative and you can seethat you have a lot of control overexactly how far away that rule should beaway from the word that looks great nowI'll click OK and I want to apply thissame rule to all of these otherparagraphs so I need to make a paragraphstyle to do this efficiently I'll openmy paragraph Styles panel choose newparagraph style and give it a name cancall it anything you want of course butI'll click OK and apply it to thatparagraph then I'll select all of theseother paragraphs and apply the sameparagraph style you see in one click youcan get all of those rules we can makethis even prettier by editing thisparagraph style I'll just double click1on it and go over to the span columns1pane of the paragraph style options1dialog box and I'm going to change the1paragraph layout to split to the columns1I'm going to split this one column1that's really wide into two narrower1columns and I'm going to make sure the1inside gutter is large enough I'll set1that to let's say 2 pi cos I'll click OK1and you can see that we now have two1columns and the rules look great alright1let's turn our attention to adding these1rules up here to make a name or address1rule in the middle of a paragraph I'm1first going to create a new text frame1out here in an area that doesn't have1anything on the page and I'm going to1type in the word that I want to have as1a label for that address I'll just say1name let's go ahead and select that and1make it smaller let's change the font to1make it italic probably Center it1looks pretty good and now we need the1rule itself above that label to get that1rule I once again go to the control1panel flyout menu and choose paragraph1rules in this case I could add a rule1below or a rule above but technically1because the rule is going to be above1the text I'll make it a rule above I'll1say rule on make it a little bit1narrower and then change the offset and1I'm going to make this a positive offset1until it goes above the word now in this1case I do not want that rule to go1outside of the frame it's going to mess1up my trick if it goes beyond the frame1so instead I'm going to turn on keep in1frame turn on this little checkbox here1and that forces the rule inside the1frame just forces it right along the top1edge of the frame but as I increase my1offset it changes the distance between1the paragraph that word and the rule so1I'm going to set this let's say about1seven points down that looks good I'll1click OK I always like making a1paragraph style for these things in case1I need to change them later so I'll make1a new paragraph and I'll call this label1for form and apply it to that paragraph1finally I'm going to go back to my1selection tool and I'm going to double1click on the bottom side handle to make1this smaller that snaps that side up so1that it can be as small as it can be and1still fit all the text it needs to fit1so there you go I have a rule about a1label and all I need to do now is put it1down here inside my text there are1several different ways to anchor objects1inside text but I'm just going to go to1the Edit menu and cut this to the1clipboard with a selection tool then1I'll double click on this to switch to1the type tool select that word that I'm1trying to replace delete it and then1paste from the Edit menu that actually1paste that object in as an inline or1anchored object inside the paragraph1I'll go back to my selection tool and1you'll see that this is too high1I need that rule which is going along1the top edge of that frame down along1the base line down here so all I need to1do is click on that anchored object and1drag it down I'll drag it down as far as1it'll go and it stops when the top edge1of that frame is at the baseline of the1text1let's click off of here and go into1preview mode by pressing the W key to1see how this looks that looks pretty1good1I probably want a space before they are1so I'll double-click in there and click1and add a space there we go now I'd like1to add another one of these over here1for the address I'll just drag over it1with a mouse copy it to the clipboard1with a command or control C come over1here to the address and paste and you'll1see that I now have pasted in exactly1the same anchored object into this1section except that this should not be1labeled name it should be labeled1address so I'll just select it just by1double clicking on it and changing the1word I could do the same thing over here1by selecting this text down here and2pasting in fact while it's on the2clipboard I could paste this 50 times2really quickly and then go back and2change the labels one of the great2things about this technique is that the2label will always stay centered inside2the line the other great thing about2this technique is that it's really easy2to expand or extend the line or make it2shorter just choose the selection tool2click on the anchor object and then2expand it by dragging one of the side2handles to the right or left there we go2now that one's wider and we can make2this one narrower if we want there we go2you see you have a lot of control over2the width of these lines now as I said2there are a lot more good ways to make2lines for forms including tabs with2leaders or using anchored paths but I2find that these two rule above methods2really help when you're trying to lay2out a
