How do I fill out 2013 tax forms?

You file Form 8843 to exclude the days that you were present in the US as an exempt individual. OPT is considered to be an extension of your student status, so you are an exempt individual for the purposes of the substantial presence test while you are on OPT. Because you are considered to be a student while on OPT, you can claim the benefit of the standard deduction that is available for students under the US/India tax treaty.

Which IRS forms do US expats need to fill out?

You could ask the IRS, but if they give you wrong advice and you follow it, that won’t save you from getting fined (or possibly serving jail time). Otherwise, see Mike Breen’s post, which summarises the situation well. Of course, that’s the current filing burden; if they “simplify” the tax code, the burden will surely go up.

Do military members have to pay any fee for leave or fiancee forms?

First off there are no fees for leaves or requests for leave in any branch of the United States military. Second there is no such thing as a fiancée form in the U.S. military. There is however a form for applying for a fiancée visa (K-1 Visa)that is available from the Immigration and Customs Service (Fiancé(e) Visas ) which would be processed by the U.S. State Department at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy overseas. However these fiancée visas are for foreigners wishing to enter the United States for the purpose of marriage and are valid for 90 days. They have nothing to do with the military and are Continue Reading

How can I make it easier for users to fill out a form on mobile apps?

Make it fast. Ask them as few questions as possible (don't collect unnecessary information) and pre-populate as many fields as possible. Don't ask offputting questions where the respondent might have to enter sensitive personal information. If some users see you collecting sensitive information, they might not be ready to share that with you yet based on what you are offering, and they will think twice about completing the form.

Do I need US EIN taxpayer ID to properly fill out a W8-BEN form?

Since I have asked this question, I believe that I should share the knowledge I have managed to collect in its regard. So, it appears that you should file a SS-4 form to apply for the Employer Identification Number (EIN). To this successfully you will need to have a contract signed with customer in the USA. You will have to show given contract to the US IRA. The downside of this method is that:It requires for you to sign contract with US party prior to the acquiring the EIN You will have to mail originals of your Passport/Natinal ID and contract to the IRA.Instead of going that way, I have deci Continue Reading

Why don't schools teach children about taxes and bills and things that they will definitely need to know as adults to get by in life?

You Don't Get The Premium Channels Because they are not the children of the School nor of the State, they are citizens. While it is necessary, it is not done because YOUR family should do this for you, should be making an effort to understand how. The assumption that school is to teach a person about the immensity of life is ridiculous and one of the ways that society leans on school (government) rather than self-empowerment. You get what you pay for. If school is a free public service than you can’t have the premium channels. Now that omission might screw up the usage of those skills but schoo Continue Reading

What happens to all of the paper forms you fill out for immigration and customs?

Years ago I worked at document management company. There is cool software that can automate aspects of hand-written forms. We had an airport as a customer - they scanned plenty and (as I said before) this was several years ago... On your airport customs forms, the "boxes" that you 'need' to write on - are basically invisible to the scanner - but are used because then us humans will tend to write neater and clearer which make sit easier to recognize with a computer. Any characters with less than X% accuracy based on a recognition engine are flagged and shown as an image zoomed into the particular character so a human operator can then say "that is an "A". This way, you can rapidly go through most forms and output it to say - an SQL database, complete with link to original image of the form you filled in. If you see "black boxes" at three corners of the document - it is likely set up for scanning (they help to identify and orient the page digitally). If there is a unique barcode on the document somewhere I would theorize there is an even higher likelihood of it being scanned - the document is of enough value to be printed individually which costs more, which means it is likely going to be used on the capture side. (I've noticed in the past in Bahamas and some other Caribbean islands they use these sorts of capture mechanisms, but they have far fewer people entering than the US does everyday) The real answer is: it depends. Depending on each country and its policies and procedures. Generally I would be surprised if they scanned and held onto the paper. In the US, they proably file those for a set period of time then destroy them, perhaps mining them for some data about travellers. In the end, I suspect the "paper-to-data capture" likelihood of customs forms ranges somewhere on a spectrum like this: Third world Customs Guy has paper to show he did his job, paper gets thrown out at end of shift. ------> We keep all the papers! everything is scanned as you pass by customs and unique barcodes identify which flight/gate/area the form was handed out at, so we co-ordinate with cameras in the airport and have captured your image. We also know exactly how much vodka you brought into the country. :)
