Rules For Online Groups Form: Draft, Finish and forward

[Music].here at news your console we've got two.virtual machines here both of which are.available on the Internet.to prove the point if we go into the.test VM one and look at the.configuration on the right hand side.we'll notice that this has a public IP.address starting with 13.8 II 1 so just.to check this if we go to a PowerShell.prompt and do a test net connection.against the RDP port 3389 after a couple.of seconds it will come back and tell us.that that's open and available to the.internet there we go the TCP test.succeeded equals true so in order to.stop this we can go to network security.groups in there's your console here and.create a network security group to block.that so if we go to add at the top and.give it a name apply it to our.subscription and give it a resource.group and the location here I'm going to.leave is West Europe because that's.where I've got my virtual machines and.my virtual network so after a few.moments of creating that we click on.refresh we should have our network.security group appear in the list here.so if we click on our network security.group we'll see that we've got a blank.networks security group with the default.set of rules here so if we scroll down a.little bit we've got the inbound.security rules and the outbound security.rules listed here you'll notice at the.bottom the very lowest priority is the.deny all so that's the catch-all that.will deny anything that isn't otherwise.explicitly allowed so now if we scroll.down a little bit in the settings and we.go to network interfaces we can.associate this network security group.with the network interface of our test.virtual machine so if we go to associate.at the top here it will list out all of.our NICs against our virtual machines.and we're going to select the test VM.one here so that will associate all of.our rules against that machines network.interface and now that that's being.created so now if we go back to our.PowerShell prompt and run our test net.connection command again against the.port 3 3 8 9 4 Rd.and that comes back as failed and timed.out because our network security group.is blocking it so if we go back to the.usual console we can add in a rule and.inbound security rule here to our.network security group to allow that so.if we click on add at the top I'm going.to leave the source as any and the.source port range is any and the.destination here I'm going to leave as.any and I'm going to just change the.port to 3 3 8 9 if I scroll down a.little bit more I get to choose the.protocol and the action as to whether to.allow or deny it I'm going to leave this.as allow and change the name of the rule.and then click on add at the bottom here.so now we've got our new rule our port 3.3 8 9 rule at the top of the list here.and the priority is set to 100 now the.priority goes from lowest to highest and.it's the first one that it hits that is.relevant that will win so we've got to.deny all of the bottom but the port 3 3.8 9 rule is lower priority therefore.we'll win so we go back to our power.shell prompt and we run our test net.connection here again we'll see that.that comes back is true however if we.look at the IP address for our second.virtual machine.take a copy of that external IP address.and see if we can connect to that on.three three eight nine.we'll see that because that has no.network security group applied to its.NIC that everything is open and we can.get to that 3 3 8 9 port on that machine.so if we go back to our network security.group.and remove that inbound security rule.so that now we have the default deny or.rule which is winning just about.everything so if we go down to our.network interfaces on the configuration.blade here and remove that association.with the test VM one Nick and we're.going to associate this network security.group with the subnet that's got both of.those machines into it click on.associate choose the virtual network.we've only got one here choose the.subnet again we've only got one and then.click on OK.so now that that's associated with that.subnet and our inbound rules here are.back to the default we should be.blocking port 3389 for both of those.machines so we go back to our PowerShell.prompt and run our test net connection.against the second machine again.you'll see that that fails because the.network security group is blocking.everything is that subnet and just to.prove the point let me run this test Net.connection against the other machine the.test VM one we should see that that's.blocked off as well.and there we go it fails thanks for.watching.
