is very saturated so we're going to.find this the water table down here I I.like to dig and then make a little area.nearby and then lay down my soil profile.so that I can describe it all at the.same time and I am digging about 20.inches although I'm pretty sure I'm.gonna find a wetland well before that so.I probably don't technically need to go.that far not sure if you could hear that.but I just heard hydrology sound that.the soils may cuz it tries to hold on so.the first thing I'm gonna do is figure.out how many layers I have in this soil.horizon that I've just pulled out it.looks like it's just a lot of the same.I'm gonna open this up because these.Dutch augers really mix up the soil and.something you probably can't tell.through the film but I can tell by feel.is this layer to this layer there's a.really steep increase in I believe clay.so even though the colors are the same.it's actually a different layer of the.soil profile because of the texture of.the soil so we look for color and.texture and all kinds of stuff but those.are the two ones then.so right here I'm actually only seen.well I guess there's a little bit of.something at the very top and then we.got this layer and then this layer that.goes all the way down to the bottom so.I'll measure them out looks like my top.layer is only two inches deep next layer.it's kind of spread out a little bit.next layer and right here at a foot so.I'll go from 2 to 12 and then it'll go.12 down to 20 and the next thing I do is.I color the soil so we use these Munsell.color charts to color soils and there.are three different aspects of it to.color the soil so we have hue which are.these tabs on the side which is the.dominant color of the soil or I'm sorry.of the color we're looking for then when.you go on each page they have value and.chroma so value being the lightness and.the darkness which you can see from here.to here and chroma is the purity of the.color so the further over we get the.more of the colors you can see so in.this case 10 yr is equal parts yellow.and red if we go this way we are more.yellow and if we go this way we're more.red but we always start on 10 we are in.southern Minnesota because that's the.most common page we're gonna be at so.you take a sample piece from the middle.of the auger you try not to get it from.the side.oops I grabbed this wrong layer start at.the top and we got all kinds of colors.going on in here.so normally we look for a dominant color.and then models I don't know that we.have a dominant color here to be honest.with you there's three colors I'm seeing.really dominant so I'm just gonna do.three different colors all is what I'm.calling the matrix and on this page I'll.start with this yellow are this brown or.orange or color if you will and.everybody sees colors differently but.ideally you're not wearing sunglasses.and you have the Sun behind you which I.believe I have the best I can do and I'm.gonna go 10-yr 4 6 which I'm just gonna.try to remember right now as I hands are.covered in it see if we can find a good.chunk of this darker color 10 yr to 1.and then this last color I'm going to.save after I write these two down.so find that piece again this last color.we see in here is actually something we.call Glade and you don't get to see it.all the time and that happens when a.soil is saturated a lot so there's.specific colors in the back of the book.that are these aqua colors if you will.and so this happens when iron has been.wet for a long time so I'm in a color.that lasts color off this page I can.find a good piece of it maybe I'm not.the problem with Glade soils is the.reason they're that colors because they.haven't had oxygen exposed to them and.so the longer you wait to color them.that color changes because oxygen is.getting to it so sometimes opening it up.helps alright so this one is 5g5 one.it's colored slightly differently and.like I said I think there's equal parts.of all three of those so I'm just gonna.call all three of those one 30% of all.three of them and something I'm going to.note now even though I'll come back and.do it later is I have saturation at the.surface right away it right when I.started pulling it out so okay my next.layer I want to take a clod and open it.up to make sure I'm coloring the middle.piece you'll see in here that there are.some mixing pieces and that just happens.with the auger so I like to open it up.several times to make sure that those.colors I'm seeing are based on the.outside of the auger basically because.that's just mixing from above so I just.try to open up a couple pieces to make.sure those things aren't actually.occurring which I don't see them in.other places so I'm gonna assume that's.not actually part of the soil profile.go back to my 10 yr page bugs all over.my face no I think it's this 10 yr to.one color another thing that I saw.before when I was digging these is these.iron concentrations in the dark surface.and when I saw these I knew it was a.hydric soil we have a indicator called.redox dark surface so darks pretty.obvious and these little iron.concentrations are called redox features.so I have the dominant color of 10 yr 2.1 but I'm also going to color these.little inclusions right here.[Music].last thing I want to do is texture the.soil and I believe all of these are.gonna be in that loam category a lot of.them will have other quantifiers and.qualifiers excuse me for them so this.top piece might be alone the second.piece I believe is also alone but this.bottom piece has a lot more silt and.clay in it but I still think the.dominant texture is alone and we we need.to know that so that we can figure out.which one of these hydric indicators.we're looking for so I'm gonna call this.loam loam and then these are some pretty.tough pieces so I think I'm gonna call.it a clay loam and that is a soil.profile.
