guy so long to figure out.something that's so obvious and then I'm.going to tell you the magnitude of this.thing and I think he'll understand why.it's taken me all this time the.punchline to the whole thing is we have.to get better at prospecting every.single thing that is adverse in you.suruc when I try to chase that thing.down and figure out where it is it ends.up smack dab in the realm of prospecting.now I'm going to talk to you today about.literally about building the prospecting.monster because I'm going to tell you.this thing is a monster I'm going to.tell you everything you need to know.about this because it is our enemy our.fear of prospecting and I think fear is.the right word let me tell you what I.see this thing had everything in the.world going for him.everything in the world that keeps you.from prospecting this guy's got a handle.on and I'm going to take take you.through that now I'm not a recruiter and.I stay cognizant of that fact.you got to listen to the people who do.it for a living and I listen to you but.I tell you what I am a human being and.I've been a human being longer than any.book any of you people than human being.and I understand about human weakness.I'm certainly not immune from it and.that's the first thing this guy's got.going on we don't like the prospect we.do not like rejection we're human beings.and we're in a business where if you go.out there and get rejected unkindly nine.times out of ten you just had a great.day because the odds are you gonna get.rejected 19 out of 20 times and this.guy's whispering to you okay you know do.you know what do that you don't to go.out there again and get and get rejected.is if that weren't enough the other.aspect of human nature the alternative.to going out here and prospecting is.processing and we love processing human.beings again your one-on-one with an.individual who is about to make the most.important decision in his or her life.and you know it it's not just a slogan.the fact is that person is going to be.more than they would have been if they.hadn't met you and you feel good about.that.I would I'd feel great about that and.that person has given you some good.feedback because they know you are.helping them make this decision and you.go through this process and you write.waivers there's a touch of gamesmanship.involved in it get a little bit better.at writing waivers figure out when the.good doc versus the bad doc is gonna be.at the MEPS.maybe you decide to kind of send.everybody at the end of the month you.know there'll be a lot of people on the.floor it's kind of the wildebeest herd.you know think of the lion can't eat.everybody by the way just a note that.does not work that way your chances of.getting somebody through are far better.in the beginning of the month then at.the end of the month and if you think.about it a second it makes a lot of.sense a doc doesn't have the time to.look as carefully and so what do they do.just write it off uh-huh they pun it to.a referral.okay this end of the month stuff doesn't.is not as effective and we can.demonstrate it with data throughout but.nevertheless part of the kind of the.game and the lure their vibe and it is.kind of a little contest but it gets.worse because I tell you another part of.human nature we like to be recognized.by our chain of command I'm not talking.about kissing up I'm just talking about.seeing them having something positive to.talk about well everything in this.command mitigates against prospecting.and supports processing you see when you.processing someone now you've got it.counting noun everybody can get involved.it's a number that can be on the floor.or it's how you doing with so-and-so got.that waiver almost done top hey there.you go and there's feedback it's process.it's something that is visible and.tangible you're out there prospecting.you're not only getting rejected off you.by yourself nobody sees you because I.tell you what there's a sad answer to a.question I ask very often I asked.recruiters how long has it been since.your first sergeant rode with you on a.p3 or was with you during area.canvassing you know what the answer is.answers never across this command the.answer is never.emmalin's just talking to cynical people.if I ask them how long has it been since.the first surgeon is sat down and.listened to you do p1 but they'll give.me a number.how long have been since first sergeant.checked your tools they'll get let's say.two weeks ago or two months ago or.something so these aren't people who.saying first starting up does anything.for me they are people who report to me.that first sergeant's Dunkel with them.on prospecting and I told you I believe.recruiters every time so you're not.being seen out there but you are being.seen when you're doing the processing.and it feels good not being seen doesn't.feel good.you see what starts to happen but it.gets worse.you know I am that I live at the the.other end of the sewer pipe here people.when someone makes an error in judgment.that is sufficiently bad they end up on.my desk let me tell you how bad this.prospecting Monster is there's a.slippery slope out there that has to do.with the processing and it goes.something like this about two days into.the job you figure out there's some.questions you can hardly stand the.answer to and some people then kind of.take a little step and sort of identify.those questions to the candidate you.know I'm going to ask you a question.here now if the answer is no we can go.on with this process if the answer is.yes we're going to have some delays and.got to do some so here's the question.you know what kind of tiptoeing there.with integrity but I tell you there's.another step on that slippery slope and.that one says hey I'm gonna ask you a.question here now if you say no and you.continue to say no through the whole.process you're squared away nobody.better check on you.well I think you've already breached.integrity but in order to get on my desk.they actually take another step and my.recruiters get involved in direct.conspiracy to cover-up or to modify or.forge documents well let me tell you how.bad that that is we have without any.close second the finest noncommissioned.officers in the world in the United.States Army in order to become a.recruiter those magnificent.noncommissioned officers have to go.through a screen so we only take the.very top of them so this isn't just my.pride in what you do and I am proud of.you.this is just fact finest of the finest.now if someone told you that there was.an agent an element a policy and enemy.that was causing 1 out of 20 of those.individuals to breach their integrity to.betray every oath they'd ever sworn.wouldn't you want to fix bayonets and go.find out what that was well I fixed my.bayonet.it's the prospecting demon over here.because in the final analysis we're.having a significant number of.recruiters get themselves so involved in.the processing piece of this so.desperate not to let go of this person.why because so they don't let's go back.out here again that's why this takes 19.rejections to get this person and I'm.gonna hang on to them no matter what no.matter what and we completely lose sight.of the fact that our job is to put.quality people into the army with.integrity you know most of us are going.back to that army and yet I look around.and I'm just telling you the truth here.if we didn't have ceilings and real.tight windows collectively we would fill.this army with kept for non high school.graduates with a drug problem and you.know why it's this guy again watch this.if if you pretended out here that there.was a spectrum here I'm probably.supposed to use this board here let me.do it.dr. Mayer a quality spectrum this is.very high quality.this is very low quality let's pretend.for the sake of the argument that up.here are college folks you can't get a.recruiter on a college campus with a gun.why because the rejections are more.frequent and the rejections are more.threatening they're more personalized.I'm going to pause for a moment here to.talk about that you know I don't.understand it.finest noncommissioned officers in the.world are intimidated by folks on the.college campus and I've told you this.many times I mean look at your chest.look at the chests of the people around.you and then you realize that we got.these great Americans going out and.talking to some 19 year old kid who.can't run can't jump can't shoot never.been cold never been tired never given.an order or taken one never been scared.and this person because they're in.college intimidation they're gonna look.down their nose at at my regret I.couldn't be a recruiter I tell you what.I would be I'd be off the rolls because.about the first time at some snotty.little 19 year old kid look down his.nose at me because I was a soldier I.would be naturally whipping some.collegiate ass and I'm sure that'd be an.incident now I don't want you to do that.but when one of them looks down he knows.I want you to say I'm really glad to see.gee isn't here because we'd have an.incident okay that person cannot hold.your boots cannot hold your boots they.the chances that they will be what you.are even if they join are very slim.you're the best of the best you just.look at him you just.sorry for him and you tell him you'll.see them soon because let me tell you.about these college kids out of every.hundred kids that entered college last.September only thirty of them will earn.a degree within the next five years now.why don't they make it it's very.interesting why they don't make one of.them is a lack of maturity and.discipline what they do is they find out.that among the options of sleeping.studying and partying you can only do.two successfully in a semester and they.picked the wrong two because they don't.have any self discipline focus they fail.because of the lack of focus you know.why that is because it's hard to figure.out what you want to be when you've.never done anything and a third reason.they fail is finances maturity and.discipline focus and finances and what.do we offer all three we're their only.chance of getting through this thing.that they think there are seven out of.ten won't make it so when you go out.there looking can't college campus seven.out of ten people you look at just about.to quit go talk to it now you know.what's gonna make you feel good about.the time you go out there and you do.that and you look them in the eye and.you get some folks to come in about half.I'm going to fail the ass valve okay so.much for the mystique of the college.camp but we avoid it we avoid it because.prospective monsters whispered to you.you know you go out there you're gonna.get rejected and you don't we do it all.the way down this quality spectrum and.we just start bottom feeding and you.know why we start bottom feeding because.they don't reject us it's hard to be.insulting to someone talking to you.about a job when your greatest.aspiration and.life is to be the head fry guy they.haven't got much to deal with so they're.easy to deal with and usually these.people require more processing so I get.more of what I want and I get less of.what I hate and the army gets a lower.quality person because this prospecting.monster is whispering that into our ears.and you say you know well listen thank.God we got chain of command out there.because they're going to help this.they're gonna help this recruiter do the.difficult task of prospecting hard in.markets that reject because that's what.the quality is higher the quality more.options they got the less likely every.person you talk to is gonna want to join.and these people want to join every.quarter a raise that blue cat for window.about that big because we're allowed to.have under two percent you raise that.thing about that big contracts are.written by the end of the day boom we.got all kind of people down here that.want to join and they're easy that.station commander is going to help this.price this recruiter prospect and then I.go to the desk see there's the 533 which.if prospecting is the most important.thing.then the 533 is going to be a.prospecting list and we're going to get.on track but it's not it's a processing.list and there we go at the very first.chance to turn this thing back around to.where it should be our system emphasizes.processing you know I if I were a.station commander I'd have a sheet right.over the top and I call it a 5/32 and I.would write prospecting lists in crayon.or something so nobody thought it was a.real form and you then you had to fill.it out or something.just so that every time I opened that.five that book that now contains the 533.I had to turn a page that said.prospecting I have a sign of my office.this sign is that big and letters that.big it says don't talk about processing.until you first talked about prospecting.that's so important I think of it the.monster scares my recruiters finest.noncommissioned officers and the army.cowering in their recruiting station.don't want to go up the station.commanders are dealing with processing.well maybe the first sergeant will save.as' gonna come busting in that station.say okay how is the prospecting gonna.come in and say how many on the floor.what's that it's process.and all the rest of us are just dealing.with process we're just counting up.counting outs that's all we do we're not.helping of a prospect you know you know.recruiters talk a lot about recruiting.meeting people have been out to me the.old retired C G's of this place I call.them up everyone so onto all they want.to just talk about recruiting you know.what everybody talks about processing.they will talk about prospecting we.don't talk about that enough that's the.heart and soul of what we are now let me.tell you what the recruiters tell me I.don't know anything about recruiting.that hasn't been told to me by a.recruiter nothing but they talked to me.and they teach me and I'm passing it on.so I go into a recruiting station gone.into several sit down there Curtis said.look do this for me flip back about.three weeks and your daily planning good.okay and let's just go through this.daily planning guide they start with.Monday tell me what you did Monday now.this recruiter has got to tell me you.can't read this thing I mean it's ten.scratch coffee stains I mean it's just.nobody could ever inspect this but you.don't have to just ask a recruiter and.to this date they've just been straight.up with me and the stories go something.like this.okay let me see sir Monday gonna do some.p1 that's why I wrote these number now.usually across those numbers out as I'm.going through and I see I didn't cross.those let me see well you know what.happened on Monday I was just getting.ready to do it and a depth showed up she.was having some problems and everything.I sat down talking about an hour and a.half thick got her back squared away.online think she's gonna ship say okay.that was a good choice that was a good.choice to do that so how much do you.think you got done oh god I don't know.so not very mommy.maybe 20 minutes or some way well put.down half an hour on Monday okay let's.go to Tuesday what happened on Tuesday.oh god I remember what happened on.Tuesday certain Seacrest had a.flat tire and for some reason the truck.key didn't worked there on his govt so.what I did is I ran out I had the same.kind of vehicle so I ran out there and.we used my Jack Deveny.alright that's a good choice went and.helped a buddy and distress that was.good how much prospecting we've.done well get none well put down zero.why won't more even lots of the other.war stories the end result of this is ok.I had these up for me I couldn't believe.the number the average number of hours.that we spend prospecting in this.command is between four and five now.there's two messages here one is your.health a lot better than you think you.are because it's a miracle that we can.put people in the army with four to five.hours of prospect that's not what it's.planned if you go look at the planning.books it's ten twelve fifteen even more.this is what gets done but you know.there's sixteen hundred stations out.there enemy like doing the best I can I.mean I'm not gonna come close to seeing.all over the station so I'm worried.about this maybe I don't have the right.numbers never a couple of months ago I.walk into General Smith's office he's.talking to a battalion commander on the.phone he says hey CG just walked in I'm.gonna put you on speakerphone I want you.to tell that tale again.he called this Patang commander because.that particular battalion was hovering.in the 30s somewhere out of 41 and.jumped up into the top five the next.month jumped up into the top five and.obviously general Smith want to say what.what are you doing it is with battalion.commander reported to me he said sir.it's a little embarrassing to admit this.but sorry major and I went around we.checked we were checking with folks with.that actual prospecting had been.conducted they said you never believe.the number I said try me he said four.- five-hour I said way now we're about.to be onto something here.so ask my IG you know you really ought.to start chaser we checked that we check.okay well what do you find well we don't.do it like with an average but I'll tell.you what we just came back from three.weeks on the road the highest number of.hours of actually executed reported by.the recruiter was seven people we can't.get there with this we cannot possibly.make it with this everyone wants to take.their personal mission a station mission.- company mission to the next level you.can't do it with processing we're about.as good at that as we ever need to get.and I tell you we're tiptoeing on some.lines out there as it stands because.it's it's easier to make the wrong call.you should never do it but it's easier.to make the wrong call if you don't have.two or three people standing in the.wings you got a couple of people lined.up it's far more likely to occur to you.wait a minute I don't want to win this I.don't want to put this person in New.York we're as good at processing is.we're ever gonna get if you took the top.battalion you Zurich in terms of.production and you took their conversion.rate and gave their conversion rate to.the bottom unit and you select the.bottom unit would still be the bottom.unit I mean the difference in conversion.rates it's very tiny very tiny across.the command look at the time we spend on.on depth and this is valuable we are at.a historically low depth loss and that's.because of you we've done a wonderful.job just a note on that.here comes June and July we got a higher.percentage of seniors in our depth than.we've ever had we've got to work them.let's not blow all of this effort here.this wonderful effort that has got us a.historically low depth loss in the.summer we got to work this summer and.work it hard to get those people to ship.so they don't a trip at their historical.rate you need to start that right now.but let me just give you an example of.death we spend a lot of time talking.about DEP and talking about DEP laws put.a lot of effort in that right now across.the command debt loss runs about 15.percent if you could make it go to zero.which you can absolutely impossible if.you made it go to zero.you'd only increase your production by.fifteen percent well you're missing.missing our mission by 15 percent we're.missing it by a lot more than that the.only way you can make a quantum move is.prospecting it's the only possibility so.it's not only the enemy it's an enemy.that has got to be defeated if we're.gonna move up to where we want to be and.how do we do it we've got to execute 10.or 12 hours execute 10 or 12 now what.happens to us what's the difference.between what we plan and what we.actually execute look the rest of the.army puts together contingency plans.just in case their first plan doesn't.work we have to put together contingency.plans because of the absolute certainty.that our first plan won't work I mean.your plan depends on the whim of an 18.19 year-old kid I guarantee you you're.gonna have no ships now when I start.talking about adding in prospecting.hours oh my god I'm working so many.hours now in it where stations lots.hours I'll talk to you about working.lots hours because it comes into this.time management thing dead on I'm just.telling you what recruiters tell me.how many of you have had this day up at.6:30 you go do PT get changed come on.into the office it's too early to make.phone calls don't have an appointment.yet sit around talk to your buds how.about them bowls what do you think.Jordan retire this year don't know and.you ought to do that I mean these are.people about the same age and the same.kind of interests sharing the same.profession if I saw a station that.wasn't exchanged and that kind of.chitchat I'd be very very very worried.but anyway it kind of goes on through.the morning like that and got a 9:30.performance till about 9 o'clock get up.get ready to go gas up the govt get your.thoughts together drive there get there.a little bit early person doesn't show.stay a little late in case they had the.wrong time still a no-show make a call.nobody there leave an answer and/or a.message on the answering machine now.you're all ticked off wander off get.lunch come back to the station kick the.wastepaper can its 1300 hours you've.been up since 6:30 and haven't done a.single solitary thing that's going to.help you make a mission recruiters tell.me that happens all the time.so your next appointments at 1500 say.aren't doing anything between then.because you thought you're going to be.with this other person and now we have.huge portions of the day and you could.tell me horror stories that say well you.have by the way the 1500 you can show up.either huge amounts of time up there.that get wasted now part of that is the.nature of our business this isn't.because you're bad planners it isn't.because you're rotten lazy people it's.part of our business what I'm saying is.we got to stop being surprised by it I.mean at some stage of the game you know.why are we sitting around well I had a.no-show the answer is well what'd you.expect my answer to you is expect a.no-show have it figured out.oK you've all been through this you all.understand it I'm telling you we don't.do it I've got an appointment let's plan.my way.out there I'm going to drop some paper.I'm gonna I'm going to go ahead and talk.to some CEO I out there what am I going.to do when this person doesn't show I'm.gonna go visit that place that I haven't.visited in awhile or I'm going to go do.this or I'm going to come back to the.office and I'm going to do an hour on.the LRL or 30 minutes on the L or.something a contingency plan now I want.to talk about not just planned.prospecting but quality prospecting let.me talked about that again I'm just.telling you what the recruiters tell me.my question is when you do p1 processing.would your phone call technique have.given you a go at the school and what do.you think they tell me no not you know.why that's happening but now you've.figured out my answer to everything it's.this prospecting monster and the fear of.rejection you see if you don't give it.your best shot on the phone if you don't.go through all of the phases yeah well.you know sir you can kind of tell right.off poppycock.you cannot tell right off especially if.you haven't gone through all of the.techniques that you were trained to do.you've got to give it a quality effort.this guy is telling you don't give it a.quality effort come on you know this.person isn't gonna sell get out now.don't don't give of yourself here so.you're gonna feel more disappointed okay.guys gonna make a fool out of you gonna.go through your whole pitch here for.nothing that's what he's whispering to.you and we're listening let's do our.telephone prospecting the way we're.trained to do it let's do quality stewar.area canvassing the way we were trained.to do it let's do quality you do 10 to.12 hours of quality prospecting you're.gonna make mission.I mean people are coming close with four.to five what in the world is gonna.happen to do 10 to 12 the answer is.those few units that have done it have.made major leaps in production give me.another example we just did a big mail.out okay one and a half million copies.so they have a copy of that on your desk.but I have a copy right there when you.get the leads from that let me tell you.about the leads here's what happens we.spend a lot of money generating these.leads to a recruiter it's just another.list of people who going to reject you I.mean I understand why you're not as.excited about it as I am okay.whoopee here comes another less than.Ames I can hardly stand it now you got.to do a couple of things got to prepare.yourself to work these things this is.not a list of hot prospects it is a list.of people who are a little bit warmer.than this kind of cold lrl you got to.just listen everybody in a particular.high school at least they have responded.most of them probably wanted the socks.but at least they've responded and in.this age of pretty decent consumer.sophistication they kind of expect that.they'll get a call back.so we making two mistakes one of them is.hey I understand you wanted to join the.army no I just want to socks I mean you.can't do it like hey you went you got to.do your sales pitch the way you were.trained today then we do about two or.three of these and we got well that one.was 14 that one just wanted the socks.this guy was a grandfather therefore the.whole list is well don't throw out the.whole list and go back to your old list.you've been over five times.work this thing work every one of them.if there's 20 names you know you got 19.rejections just by odds we've only had.three keep going you know we got to turn.over a lot of rocks and there's some.crawly ugly things that get under those.rocks but under some of those rocks it's.the next army somebody turned over our.rock once we said shoot maybe I'll try.that and made the most important.decision of my life.you know prospecting is very difficult I.absolutely believe that I think you have.a hard job but let's understand that is.what the job is your job is to go out.there and to take it on the chin to get.rejected 19 times to find that one.person who will come in the army that's.what it is let's not paint it any other.way.and let's not cower from it let's not.hide from it let's not for God's sake.breach our integrity to avoid it let's.not get way down on the food chain to.avoid it let's focus on what we are.supposed to do here and that is recruit.quality people for the United States.Army with integrity prospecting is at.the heart and soul of everything bad.about you sir.everything I traced back comes right.back to a fear prospecting whether or.not you're listening to this video it.has made any difference to you I have no.idea but I can tell you this I can tell.you in a week you won't remember it.because this guy's powerful this guy is.unbelievably powerful and relentless he.is the see I told you so guy whispered.in your ear every day every phone call.every p3 this is very very powerful.you're going to have to help one another.you're going to have to sit down and.start talking about prospecting ask your.buddy to just listen in on your on your.p1 talk about different ways you might.want to do prospecting get a plan out.there for doing your leads as they come.in have a plan ready to go have a.contingency plan we've invested an.enormous amount in the high schools this.year that's hurt us in the Grad market.hurt us in the Grad mission now the way.things go you know to help us a lot in.the Grad market next year because we've.made those contacts but it won't unless.you have a plan what are you going to do.with all those people that you didn't.get signed up what are you going to do.with them this summer how are you going.to maintain them and bring them on into.the next year it's prospecting have a.plan have it worked out have those.people circled in your own checklist.there are people perhaps you want to.call when you get a no-show well there's.a million possibilities out there and.you people who do this for a living can.think of a heck of a lot more of them.than I can ever think I would say so but.running large organizations for about.the last 20 years of my life.maybe a slow learner but I know when I.got it this is it.this prospecting issue is the heart the.soul the secret to success in usury and.we've just got to take a deep breath and.say that's my job that's what I do and.when you take it on the chin you say.that's why they picked me that's why we.just can't have so many clown off the.street do this that's the answer and.ultimately I can't check yet my station.commanders not enough of them can't ride.with everybody at one time first.sergeant's gonna ride with more can't.ride with all you this solution is only.possible by the individual decision and.dedication of the finest noncommissioned.officers in the world you know I wish I.could I wish I could just give you a.close-up picture of what I feel in my.heart about noncommissioned officers.because it is the source of this.discovery how what is out there that.could possibly beat down these people.you know what general rhymer told me.last year I was coming here he said you.know you sir X in a little bit of.trouble needs to go out there and try to.fix that you think you can do that I got.eight thousand noncommissioned officers.I could invade the continent of Europe.you just want me to recruit I believe in.you I
