lower bands like 80 meters and40 meters because I'll be able to access20 and higher with a hex or whateverelse I decide to use up on the tower butfor the low bands I wanted to use anoff-center fed now the off-center fedwill work pretty well on 80 meters and alittle bit a little bit worse on 40 andthen as you get higher in the bands ofcourse you start experiencing nulls onthe higher bands what you have ananother two on forty meters as it is butwhat you're doing you're sacrificing inthe nulls but you're also gaining bygaining a little bit of gain in thosethose radiation lobes that you that youget in a multi band antenna like this soyou know do I think the nulls in thatkind of antenna are more of adisadvantage than the gain sometimes youknow because you can't really you can'treally rotate an antenna like this sobut I've still found that you know foran antenna that is resonant on as manybands as this thing is resonant on whatwe're going to shoot for is a either asix or seven band off-center fed withthis dipole and what that means is it'sgoing to actually be resonant on six orseven bands it really just depends on onthe on the balland once we get it upthere all the off-center feds I haveused in the past several years have beendifferent in that that they've all kindof resonated in different areas itreally just depends on how thefour-to-one is made and you know how youhave the antenna deployed and all thatnow some tips for tuning this thing youknow because the antenna is off-centeryou have 66% of the antenna on one sideand you're going to have 33% on theother you need to make sure that so ifyou take 10 inches off one one side1you're not going to take 10 inches off1the other side it's not like a dipole1you need to make sure you're taking off1proportionate lengths so and you want to1make sure you're taking off small1amounts now I've done enough of these in1my time I know kind of exactly how much1to nip off1the ends but it's always easier to take1away than to add to because if you end1up taking too much which is very easy to1do on this antenna it's easy to kind of1get a little overzealous because you'll1notice on this thing it's kind of hard1to unless you have someone helping you1tune this thing you know it can be it1can be kind of tedious I'm not gonna lie1it's not like a dipole usually a dipole1I can have a dipole up and tuned within1about five five to ten minutes but an1off-center fit takes a little bit longer1and what you want to do is every time1you make those adjustments every time1you nip some wire off of the ends of the1dipole you want to come back and check1your antenna analyzer do I check it1after I cut both sides I check it after1i nip off one side and that's just kind1of a technique that i've used in the1past because what i found that sometimes1my measurements aren't always accurate1so I'll nip a few inches off of one side1I'll come check it and then I'll go nip1a few inches off the other side and then1I'll come back and check it again that1way allows me to kind of see what's1going on with the curve which we're1gonna do we're gonna put the antenna up1first and I've got 90 feet of wire on1one side and we're gonna put 45 feet of1wire on the other side so that should1put us down towards the lower portion of180 meters you have to keep in mind with1this antenna when you're making1adjustments and cutting the wires that1the small adjustments like say if you1nip a few inches off it's not gonna1affect 80 meters that much you'll come1back and look at the curve and you'll1think that it hasn't even moved but if1you go up higher in frequency like say1if you go up to 6 meters that nipping1off just a few inches of the sides1you'll see makes a huge difference in1the resonance as you get higher in the1bands so you want to make sure you're1checking all the bands with this1particular antenna because whatever you1cut initially is going to affect all the1bands for this antenna so make sure you1nip off very small amounts now why do I1like an off-center FET dipole so much1well they're resonant on multiple bands1and it uses a single feed line but you1have to use a good 4 to 1 ballon with1this kind of events and a lot of folks1will tell you that you need to use a1dual core 4 2 1 I have found that to be1true in some instances it really just1depends on how you have it deployed and1this I'm really excited to use this1because it uses a combination of a four1to one with a one to one choke inside1the same box so without further ado1let's get this thing up in the air and1tuned and I'm going to show you all how1to make some adjustments and we'll come1back and check it after that after we1make the adjustments to make sure it's1resonating just right where we want it1thanks for tuning in I have been asked1before if the proximity of the metal1mast so close to the off-center feds1apex is an issue I have deployed more1off-center feds this way than I care to1admit and I have not noticed any1negative side effects from it now keep1in mind the Ballon is insulated from the1mast due to that mounting plate that we1used earlier I would just make sure that1there is no chance whatsoever that your1dipole legs can come in contact with the1metal mast they shouldn't but if you're1a dipole legs droop quite a bit they1possibly could flat top or inverted V1both configurations work great and if1you don't have the space for either of1those get creative and fold the legs up1to fit your yard I've had these things1in some pretty crazy configurations and2they've worked quite fine2I prepped the topmast piece first and2weather sealed everything zip tying the2coax along the mast all the way down my2VHF UHF antenna sits the top of this2ballon so there's another run of elam2our 400 coax tracing up the mast as well2the mast itself is also grounded at the2base lightning surge arrester is in line2and the coax is grounded so let's see2what the initial scan with the analyzer2shows let's connect everything up
